"What about you" is just a little bit more formal than "how about you." They mean the same thing. They are synonymous, and interchangeable. Both are pretty informal. En inglés, tenemos muchas situaciones así, que tenemos expresiones sinónimas....

Hi Edgar :) I think that in most contexts you could use these interchangeably and most people would take them as correct . Nevertheless, I think that the main difference lies in the fact that How about you normally requires to you explain yourself...
